Percentiles Refesher

For those who might need a refresher on percentiles, this video will get you started. The median, Q1 and Q3 are the 50th, 25th, and 75th percentile, respectively.

Please Bring These Graphs on Tuesday

As part of your homework, you are expected to email questions prior to Monday about the assignments. This is a component of the homework.

Given the nature of this week’s emails, we will be able to relax and talk about some fun statistical graphics during class on Tuesday. Please print these 20 pages of graphs and bring them to class. (You can shrink the printout and put 2 per page without an issue).

Loading JMP

If you copied the JMP file last night you have to mount the ISO, so your computer thinks its a drive. Macs should do this automatically. Windows 8 can do it with a right-click. Windows 7 requires you load third party software. See here for instructions: http://www.wikihow.com/Mount-an-ISO-Image.

Graphing and Reminder for Thursday

Chapter 1 homework includes the creation of graphs. Sketch (crudely, is fine) the graphs by hand when there is not many observations in the dataset. Use JMP for graphing when there is lots of observations in the data. We will get introduced to JMP on Thursday and you will be able to download the JMP installer onto a CD or  flash drive. I recommend a CD.

I was told that JMP was installed on some LRC workstations.

From Mesa’s IT team:

I’ve been in contact with Hamid, who manages the computers in room 4000.
He’ll be installing the JMP software on 5 of the PCs and 1 of the Macs (Thank you, Hamid!)

You should try to install JMP on your home computer as soon as possible.

Homework Assignment 1

Happy Note: Most primary assessments will be, or be closely based on, homework problems. Think of homework problems as take-home exams. Even better, you get to collaborate on these with other students and you get to ask questions and review the material with your professor.

Assignment 1a
1. Read the Preface and Chapter 7 in Baldi and Moore. (see the audio book notes).
This chapter covers the content necessary for the following awards:
Observational Studies
Definition and structure (pp. 153-154)
Sampling & Sampling Frames (pp. 154-159+, plus supplemental on sampling frames, focus on confounding)
Sampling Designs (pp. 159-163)
Sample Survey (pp. 164-167)
Case-Control & Cohort Studies (pp. 167-171)

2. Do Exercises: 7.24-7.27, 7.29-7.31, 7.33-7.34, 7.36, 7.38-7.42.

3. Review all the embedded questions as you are reading. Identify those which you cannot confidently answer. Review all the Apply Your Knowledge questions and the Check Your Skills questions. Identify those which you cannot confidently answer or are unable to justify the answer.

Odd numbered questions are briefly answered at the back of the book. The author does not provide fully developed/explained answers in the textbook. We will post more developed answers online or will provide opportunities to discuss in class.

If you are unable to answer a question or are unsure of the answer, identify the part(s) of question/answer that you do not understand and/or cannot answer.

Record the following with your completed homework answers:
• The question number
• What part of the question/answer you do understand
• Which part of the question/answer is confusing, needs clarification, or explanation
• Which specific pages you believe are most related to the question and how you attempted to resolve the issue

3. Complete Exercises in Chapter 1 other than 1.31, 1.33, 1.34, 1.35, 1.36, 1.38, 1.44, 1.45, and 1.47.

Developed homework responses are due Tuesday, August 16th. Identified issues should be submitted via email before Monday, August 15th.
