One Reason to Avoid Excel for Data Analysis

By-hand data management with Excel is prone to human error and relatively difficult to audit, and is certainly more tedious to recreate.Screen Shot 2014-09-19 at 7.08.43 AMHere is a blurb by an applied researcher, pointing this out.

R is software package, that runs off scripted commands. JMP also has scripting features and all of the GUI actions can be recorded to script files!

Secondary Awards Assessment 2

This covers the awards found on primary assessment 1. Below are descriptions for the Secondary Assessments. Related deliverables are due by September 26th. In-class assessments are to be conducted September 21st.

Review eligibly requirements in the syllabus.

You are not required to complete the secondary assessments. You can instead take the final exam in order to receive awards. If you are not eligible for secondary assessments you can take the final exam to receive awards. It is not recommended to take many awards assessments on the final.

Collaborative Boundaries
Unlike the process you might use with your homework, the development of the materials you create for these assessments must be completed only by the student submitting the material. Conceptual questions can be worked out with other students or with your professor. If you are unsure about the boundaries ask your professor. Materially complete drafts can be reviewed by your professor prior to or on September 23rd. Use of the draft-revision process is recommended and this process it key in the learning process. It also allows students to determine if there work is adequate prior to submission (there shouldn’t be any surprises).

Evidence of Sufficiency
Each of the sections below describes what is required to receive a secondary award for the underlined topics.


Interpretation of Results from Observational and Experimental Studies (15) and (20)
Biologists should understand the limitations of interpretation when reviewing observational data. They should also know the benefit of randomization in experimental studies. The two are linked directly.

To gain either or both award(s), you will write a section that could be added to a chapter on study design for a book that could be used in an introductory statistics course. Later, you can decide if you would like for your work to be included in a new book.

The section will be on the interpretation of data from experimental and observational studies.

The section must introduce the concept of confounding in observational studies and explain why good experiments are able provide better evidence of causation than observational studies. The work should contain examples and at least two references to recent (last 6 months) news reports about biology (including medicine) where the issue of confounding is pertinent (or could have been if an experimenter had not been conducted). The work should also include at least two exercises for the end of the chapter problems. The problems should be helpful in building a conceptual understanding. All items should come with a worked out answer and a “note to instructors” explaining what concepts are taught, reinforced, or covered in the questions. These should be essay questions.

As part of the assessment, your instructor may question you orally about your work, after your final submission.

  • Because not enough students are coming to class on Tuesday with completed homework sets, the homework problem rotation exercises won’t work out. NOTE: The schedule also has material from Chapter 9 and 10. Hold off on that material until the next class meeting. We will only cover a small fraction of those chapters. Those sections will be reviewed in class.

SciFri has a pod cast that addresses a few things that cognitive scientists know about studying and learning. Notice there are distinctions between retention, comprehension, application, and transference of tools and concepts. They talk about practice, releasing focus, and sleep.
